Methionine
1. Participate in the synthesis of plant hormone ethylene
As an important hormone regulating substance in crop growth and
development, ethylene plays an important role in many stages of the
crop growth cycle. Methionine is the precursor of ethylene
synthesis. First, methionine generates ethylene under the action of
adenosylmethionine synthetase aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid
(ACC) synthetase and ACC oxidase (ACO), thereby promoting cell
expansion and transformation of organic substances, and promoting
fruit maturity, It can also promote the synthesis of cell wall
degrading enzymes, force leaves, flowers or fruits to fall off
mechanically, and improve crop drought resistance.
2. Participate in the synthesis of polyamines
Polyamine is a growth regulator of crops, which participates in
important physiological processes such as crop growth and
development, gender differentiation, fruit ripening and senescence,
and adaptation to adversity. Methionine, a common precursor for
ethylene and polyamine synthesis, can compete with ethylene
synthesis to synthesize precursors. Therefore, polyamines can delay
senescence by inhibiting ethylene synthesis. At the membrane level,
polyamines can regulate the physical and chemical properties of the
membrane, Stabilize the molecular composition on the membrane,
eliminate active oxygen free radicals, and play a role in resisting
adverse environment.
3.Improve crop quality and stress resistance
Methionine is a sulfur-containing amino acid. Sulfur deficiency
will hinder protein synthesis. Methionine is an important starting
material for protein synthesis, which significantly affects crop
quality. At the same time, methionine can form antioxidant
metabolites such as glutathione and sulfate through sulfur
transfer, and improve the ability of crops to resist adverse
environments. In addition, methionine can change the composition of
the bacterial community in the root soil, prevent the invasion of
bacteria to the root system, and improve the stress resistance of
crops.
